Most low-cost "pencil" condenser mics are noisy and inconsistent, or suffer from strangely colored off-axis frequency response. So we kept getting requests for a small cardioid mic that sounds smooth and natural, even if it had to cost just a little more.
That's where the new German-made P-1 comes in. The P-1 is quiet and detailed with a tidy polar pattern and excellent transient response. It took hand-built craftsmanship to get what we wanted. So yes, the P-1 costs more than our fat-sounding HM-1, but the no-frills design still keeps it very affordable, while delivering a fully-professional microphone.
The P-1 utilizes advanced surface mount technology to keep the signal path as short as possible. It also uses relatively little phantom power and can work with voltages as low as 22 V, so it's suited to remote recording where battery power may be needed. It's also compact and discrete so it can be used to record live concerts, whether orchestral or choral.
The P-1 is outstanding on all acoustic instruments with a very natural sound. It's also wonderful on choir and percussion as well as drum overheads when you want a spacious, natural sound (as opposed to the HM-1 which delivers a fat "In your face" sound).
