We live in exciting times. Once it cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to put together a professional recording studio. Now it's possible to assemble a home studio that can compete with professional project studios anywhere. (All skills being equal, of course!)
Low cost, good-sounding microphones are a big reason why. The problem is, many of the popular affordable mics have the same bright, sizzly sound. This can be a useful sound for many sources -- but not for everything. And it can become a real problem if you track 16 tracks with the same mic, then add reverb and compression!
KEL Audio came about because I wanted to offer an affordable alternative. We're proud of our unusual new HM-2d mic. It really fills a niche along with our popular HM-1 and the sweet airy hand-built P-1. These mics aren't necessarily "better" than other low-cost condenser mics ... and they don't sound "just like" a $3,000 Neumann. They do, however, sound "different" than other affordable microphones. The goal, in other words, is to help you fill out your sonic palette at prices so low it doesn't make sense to settle for the usual.
